I’m a big fan of biscuits and gravy. It’s kind of my favorite thing to order when I go out for breakfast, if it’s on the menu. After my husband came up with amazing sausage gravy recipe, I knew I needed some biscuits to go along with it. While I love traditional biscuits (you know the classic biscuits that are a perfect circle and have all those flaky layers), I really just wanted to be able to make biscuits fast. These homemade biscuits are perfect because you basically just mix the wet ingredients and dry ingredients together then plop them on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake. There’s no rolling, cutting, chilling, or any of that stuff that takes so long when you’re making typical biscuits. And they’re still fluffy and delicious (kind of like cheddar bay biscuits but without the cheddar)! And they’re so good with that sausage gravy I mentioned earlier! And they make great options for sandwiches – add a little bacon, egg, and cheese and yum! This is the easy biscuit recipe I was looking for, and I know you’re going to love it too! Maybe they’ll even become one of your favorite recipes!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Simple ingredients – you just need five ingredients for this recipe and I can almost guarantee you’ll have all of them in your house already! No cut dough – unlike traditional biscuits that you have to roll and cut out with a biscuit cutter, these are just dropped right onto the baking sheet as is. They take way less time and are still as tasty! Great flavor – even though the ingredients are simple, that doesn’t mean these are bland or flavorless. On the contrary actually, the butter and hint of salt makes these full of delicious flavor!

Ingredient Notes

Milk – I recommend using whole milk to give these the most rich flavor possible. If you don’t have whole milk, you can use heavy cream or regular milk in a pinch. Butter – you’ll need both unsalted and salted butter for this recipe. Keep the unsalted butter nice and cold until you’re ready to make these so that it cuts into the biscuit dough and turns into coarse crumbs. The salted butter you’ll want to melt so that you can brush it on top of the biscuits once they come out of the oven! Flour – just use standard all-purpose flour for these!

How to make drop biscuits

There’s really not a lot to this recipe, but that’s why it’s one of our favorites! If you do want to complicate it a bit, check out my expert tips section at the bottom of this post for fun variations you can make on these to mix up the simple drop biscuits. Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Mix the flour, baking powder, and salt together in a large bowl. Use a pastry blender (or a pastry cutter) to cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients. Cut until butter is in pea sized balls but don’t over mix. The next step is to add the milk to the flour mixture and stir until just combined with a rubber spatula. You should end up with a sticky dough – that’s okay, that’s what you’re looking for. Next, use a large cookie scoop (or ice cream scoop) to drop biscuit dough 2-3 inches apart onto the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 12 – 15 minutes until the biscuits start to brown lightly. Remove from the oven before they get completely golden brown and let them cool for five minutes. Once they’re cooled slightly, brush the top of each biscuit with melted butter. Let biscuits cool slightly before enjoying warm. These are great as a side dish, with biscuits and gravy, or delicious as the buns for a sandwich of your favorite ingredients!

Expert Tips

Change it up with different variations. Add 1/2 cup of shredded cheese to the biscuit mixture for cheese biscuits. Add one tsp of garlic powder to the butter that gets brushed on for garlic biscuits. Or you can do both and have garlic cheddar biscuits! Make them sweet. Brush with honey butter instead of regular butter when they come out of the oven. Or brush with butter and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. You can then use them with your favorite dessert sauces like this homemade strawberry sauce or for strawberry shortcake. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. Freeze biscuits in a freezer bag for up to six months. To thaw, simply remove from the bag and allow to come to room temperature before enjoying.
